About the Forest Glade Flower Farm

Location: Our farm sits at 700 feet elevation about one hour East of Seattle Washington, on the sloping plateau foothills.

Our Hardiness zone: We are in Zone 7b, whereas our home and greenhouse in Seattle are in Zone 8.

Farm size: The property is many acres-mostly trees-but the field is less than 1/2 acre.

Our climate: We weather (pun intended) the best and worst of temperature and rain. Basically, it rains 9 months of the year and then we experience a Mediterranean drought in July, August and part of September. In the summer of 2021 we experienced the hottest temperature ever recorded in our area of 110+ and one of the rainiest Falls. So, if a flower can make it here, it can thrive in many areas.

Our soil and practices: Our flower field is centered in a small glade, or meadow, in between a dense forest of Cedar, Spruce, and Alder trees as well as Bigleaf Maples. It is these maple trees shedding their leaves each fall that have provided decades of precious leaf mold which has enriched and conditioned the soil to create a rich and fertile area for growing flowers.  This is a process we continue by feeding our planting bed with mulch from the surrounding forest such as wood chips, moss, and grass clippings. We don't spray chemicals on the flowers or grass, because it is the same grass our kids and dogs roll around in and the flowers we spend our day with. Our water comes from our private well and we fertilize via siphon mixer irrigation system.

Our values: Our farm is part of the family home as well as part of the mossy wilderness. This shared space between the wild and the family where we grow all of our flowers and dahlia tubers is the heart of our values. While it is our home, it is also the home to countless forest creatures just feet away: a chorus of treefrogs, deer, coyotes, bears, and countless birds. The frogs and birds help by eating bugs that eat the flowers, and that's how we like it. If only more of them liked to eat slugs.

What do we grow? Beyond cut flower classics such as sunflowers, sweet peas, peonies, and ranunculus, we specialize in growing hundreds of varieties of dahlias.
